Wooden Beads
Give some thought to the type of jewelry you wish to design with wooden beads by drafting it out on a notepad first. If you have wooden beads to make a bracelet or necklace, then first measure the size of the persons neck or wrist who will be wearing the jewelry.
Wooden Beads, Sizes
Ascertain the length and thickness of the thread needed to make the item. This will show you how many wooden beads you need to thread and how large the holes need to be.
Call in at your nearest arts and crafts retailer to select the wooden beads and to check out the various price ranges. Look at the kind of wood and the finish or paint used on the wooden beads. If you wish to paint or varnish your own wooden beads, then take a look at the choices of paints and colours in the craft store to get inspiration.
Paint Wooden Beads
To make a bracelet from wooden beads, first thread your main bead onto the thread and dip it carefully into a tub of acrylic paint. Use a soft duster or cloth to wipe off any surplus paint and hang the wooden beads to dry out. Acrylic paint dries rapidly, often in seconds. Although it may be quicker to string a few of your wooden beads and dip them all at the same time, they actually turn out much nicer when this is done one by one.
If you wish to make a necklace from wooden beads, then first select a master bead, or main bead, for the front of the necklace and put it in the lower middle section of the U shape in the ridge of the bead board, facing upwards. Place wooden beads on to both sides of the master bead of the necklace, until the complete length of the necklace has been beaded. For instance, a necklace 20 inches long will have 10 inches of wooden beads on either side of the middle master bead.
Put together your finished jewelry piece by securing fasteners or stringing beads, adding chains, attaching other materials to the wooden beads by using clasps etc.
You can create wooden beaded bracelets with plastic “pony” beads or use circular wooden beads available from the jewelry department of craft outlets, or by fashioning your own paper beads.
You will need to decide which kind of jewelry to make as different pieces will require different materials. Necklaces should use either a chain or a string thread while a bracelet could use elastic thread.
Place the wooden beads so that they form your chosen design. Wooden beads come in a selection of shades that range from lifelike wood colors to stained wood colors. Place the wooden beads along the favored design for the length of the string or thread.
Fold one end of the wire in half and push the end into the jump ring so that the ring sits in the fold. Place a crimping bead onto the thread below the fastener loop and push down securely with the needle nose pliers to close the crimp. Duplicate this step with the other end of the wire.
Wooden Beads In Necklaces
Snip a piece of jewelry thread to a length of 16 inches for a short necklace or 18 to 20 inches for a longer necklace. String the choice of wooden beads onto the jewelry thread. You can use a different wooden bead for the main bead to complement any outfit of clothing, or you can use a larger wooden beads as a pendant.
