Make Sodium Silicate
We make sodium silicate from drain cleaner and those little gel beads you find packaged with electronic items for humidity control. The procedure is really simple, just make a solution of 10mL with 4-8grams of sodium hydroxide, use the full 8 grams if you want stoichiometric sodium silicate, and 4 grams if you want “liquid glass” solution for doing the chemical garden experiments. Heat the solution and add in 6 grams worth of crushed silica gel beads. The finer the better. if they aren’t dissolving, you might need to add more water. Once it’s dissolved, you’ll have a concentrated solution of sodium silicate. For experiments using Sodium Silicate solution, check out these videos: www.youtube.com For information on the chemistry, check out the web page at: sites.google.com

Is there any reason i cant get this sodium silicate to form a polymer with ethanol?
I tried the old bouncy ball experiment and I couldn’t get it to work. The ethanol and sodium silicate just formed 2 layers.
So I looked it up, and bingo! It seems to be right! Cement isn’t as simple as CaO + SiO2, the second ingredient is usually more complex, but this does seem to be the basic idea. And Thanks, Nurdrage! You have the best videos on chemistry by far, and we love your sense of what is interesting and important in science!
So I put the question away. Then Nurdrage taught me that sand (SiO2) reacts with molten NaOH, and other forms of SiO2 even with aqueous NaOH, as in this video. So, I started thinking, maybe the CaO, which with water becomes Ca(OH)2, reacts with SiO2 in a similar way, making calcium silicate, when cement hardens.
This video and the one on dissolving glass with drain cleaner answered an old question I had. The question was: what is the chemistry of cement? I knew cement was a mixture of calcium oxide and something else, like maybe sand. I imagined that the calcium oxide would react with the CO2 in the air to make calcium carbonate, and that would have something to do with the hardening of cement. But cement hardens even under water, so that theory didn’t sound right.
were do you get the vials?
please reply. thanks.
i was was wondering if you could do this without using sodium hydroxide and use something like bicarbonate of soda (NaCHO3) or something similar. Thanks
Ok, so I want to use Sodium Silicate as a concrete sealer, and I’m wondering A) How big of a batch do you think I could make this in? and B) Does it harden over time, or does it stay liquid?
What is Silica Gel? Is it SiO2 (silciumdioxide) or…?
I made a batch of this using 100ml H2O, 40g NaOH(Red Devil Lye), and 60g of pure Silica crystal cat litter. It worked great. Would it be possible to make a larger volume, say 3 liters in a glass bottle? Mix up the NaOH and water, then add the Silica and leave it set for a few days, stirring every now and then?
I use it for making sand cores in metal castings.
Is there a list of the different Sodium Silicates and what they are used for?

Can you show us …How to make sodium dithionite Na2S2O4 is strong reducing agent…
Thanx………
@joblessalex You would need to reduce the metal ions. You could do this by passing an electrical current under the right circumstances (right solutions, electrodes, etc). You could also get metal by Oxidation-Reduction reactions (eg. you can get silver from a silver nitrate solution by adding a piece of copper wire into the solution).
Is it possible to make sodium metal out of salt?
abrakadabra there is no limit. know were the origin chemistry comes from? eye of neut and other things mixed in a cauldron, words do cast spells on those who hear them especially if they have the chemistry of a potion in them .what you eat and drink creates perception,be aware of what you put in your body as it’s a great tool.
You can use water glass to preserve eggs! Apparently, if you dilute it 1:3 with water and dip eggs in, it will seal up the porous egg shells. It’s possible to now store these sealed eggs for up to a year. However, Given the world is going to end sometime next year, you won’t have much time to test it out though.
@blueduderanch Only Molten Sodium Hydroxide Dissolves Glass.
to get pure sodium silicate u should mix 8g sodium hidroxide and 6g Silica gel?
can i boil the solution to get a powder of sodium silicate, or it will decompose or som?
@blueduderanch nothing, its just VEEEERY slow in solution, to dissolve glass with NaOH u need to melt NaOH, an then put the glass in the container with the molten NaOH(steel container)

the silica beads……. if you put them in water they pop and crackel…… whats going on there?
